How to create and verify a Google Business Profile in Singapore, including home-based and service-area businesses, verification methods and fixes. To create and verify a Google Business Profile in Singapore, sign in with a Google account, search for your business at business.google.com, add your name, category and contact details, choose whether customers visit you or you travel to them, then complete the verification method Google offers. Home-based and service-area businesses can use it too, and can usually keep their home address private. The method Google offers varies, so follow what you see on screen.
Check the current steps and verification options in Google’s official Business Profile help at support.google.com/business. Screens, wording and the methods offered change, and Google decides which one you can use.
What a Google Business Profile is, and why verify
A Google Business Profile is your free listing on Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your name, phone, hours, photos, services and reviews. Verification proves that you are the real owner or an authorised manager, which lets you edit the profile, reply to reviews and, importantly, stops someone else from claiming it.
Without a verified profile you cannot reply to reviews, and you cannot easily fix wrong information. If you plan to collect reviews, read how to get more Google reviews in Singapore after you finish this guide.
Before you start: gather your details
Have these ready
Business basics
- Business name exactly as customers know it (matching your signage, invoices and website)
- Main category, such as Air conditioning contractor or House cleaning service
- Phone number you answer, ideally the same as on your website
- Website address, if you have one
Location details
- A full Singapore address, including postal code, if customers visit you
- A list of areas you serve, if you travel to customers
- Opening hours, including public holidays if you open
Proof ready if asked
- Photos of your premises, signage, vehicle or equipment
- ACRA business profile or other registration document
- Utility bill or lease, if Google asks for proof of address
Which one will Google ask for? That depends on your business, so have a few ready rather than guess.
Step by step: create the profile
Create your profile
- 1
Sign in
Use a Google account you will keep, ideally a shared business one with two-step sign-in.
- 2
Search for your business
Go to business.google.com and check it does not already exist.
- 3
Add name and category
Use your real name. Pick the most accurate main category.
- 4
Choose location type
Do customers visit you, do you go to them, or both?
- 5
Enter contact details
Phone, website and, if relevant, address or service areas.
- 6
Verify
Choose the method Google offers.
Search first, then claim
Google often already has a listing for your business, created from public data or by a customer. If you find it, claim it instead of creating a duplicate. Duplicates confuse customers and can cause problems later. If the listing is already claimed by someone else, you may be able to request access. Google will guide you.
Name and category
Use your registered trading name. Do not add keywords like “Cheap Best Aircon Servicing Singapore 24 Hours” to your name. That is against Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended. Choose the category that best describes what you are, and add secondary categories only if they are true. Our Google Business Profile guide covers the full profile in depth.
Home-based and service-area businesses
Many Singapore businesses run from an HDB flat or condo: cleaners, tutors, handymen, home bakers, freelance designers. Google allows this, with conditions.
Which type are you?
Home-based, by appointment
Tutor at home, home beautician. Consider keeping the address private and the profile service-area only.
Home-based, travelling
Cleaner, aircon, handyman. Use service areas and hide the address.
Shopfront or office
Show the address and opening hours.
Shopfront plus visits
Show the address, and add the areas you serve.
Hiding your address
If you serve customers at their location, you can choose to hide your address and instead list the areas you serve, for example Tampines, Bedok, Pasir Ris, or by postal district. This helps protect your privacy. Be aware that you may still need to give your address to Google during setup and verification, even if the public does not see it. We cover the details in how to hide your home address on Google Business Profile.
Being realistic about service areas
List the areas where you really work. Do not list the whole island if you only serve the east, and do not create several profiles for different areas using fake addresses or virtual offices. Google treats those as spam, and the profile can be removed.
Shared spaces and virtual offices
A shared office or serviced office can be eligible only if staff are there during stated hours and meet customers. A mailing address, virtual office or post office box generally does not qualify. If you are unsure, check Google’s guidelines for eligible business locations.
Verification methods
Google decides which options appear for your business. You might see one or several. Do not pay anyone who says they can skip verification.
Common verification methods
| How it works | Watch out for | |
|---|---|---|
| Postcard | Google mails a code to the address you entered. You enter it online. | It goes to the address, so check the unit number and wait. If you move, request again. |
| Phone or SMS | A code is sent by call or text to your business number. | You must be able to receive it on that number. |
| A code is sent to an email address. | Only offered to some businesses. | |
| Video verification | You record or stream a short video showing location, signage, equipment and proof of ownership. | Plan to show a continuous view. Follow Google's on-screen instructions. |
| Live video call | A Google specialist guides you over a call. | Be ready to show your premises or vehicle and documents. |
If you choose video verification
Plan the video. Show the street or building (without exposing neighbours’ private details), then your business signage or branded vehicle, then tools, uniforms or stock, then proof you manage the business, like a registration document. Keep it continuous, and avoid editing. For a home-based business, show equipment, branded materials and how you operate, not necessarily your living room.
Common problems and fixes
When verification goes wrong
| Cause | What to try | |
|---|---|---|
| Postcard never arrives | Wrong unit number, mail issue, or delay. | Check the address and unit, wait a reasonable time, then request again or ask for another method. |
| No verification option | Profile may be suspended or category not eligible. | Check for notices, review Google's guidelines, and correct your details. |
| Video rejected | Not enough proof, or the video was cut or unclear. | Re-record a continuous video showing signage, equipment and proof. |
| Someone else owns it | An ex-agency or former employee claimed it. | Request ownership from within Google, and ask the previous manager to transfer. |
| Duplicate profiles | Two listings for the same business. | Claim one and report or mark the other as a duplicate. |
Verification do and avoid
Do
- Use accurate, consistent details
- Keep a copy of your registration and photos
- Use a business-controlled Google account
- Turn on two-step sign-in
Avoid
- Use a fake address or virtual office
- Stuff your name with keywords
- Create multiple profiles for the same business
- Pay a stranger to 'guarantee' verification
After verification: finish the profile
Verification is the start. Complete these as soon as you are in:
- Hours and contact. Include the phone number customers will answer, and link a WhatsApp number if you use one.
- Services. List what you actually do, using customers’ words.
- Photos. Real photos of your team, work and vehicle. Avoid stock images.
- Description. Plain language, no promises you cannot keep.
- Website. Link to a page that matches what your profile says.
- Review link. Copy it and start asking, using the WhatsApp templates.
The Google Business Profile checklist for service businesses covers each item in detail.
A mini scenario
Ravi is a handyman who lives in a Woodlands HDB flat. He does not want strangers knowing his home address. He creates a profile as a service-area business, enters his address privately for verification, and lists Woodlands, Yishun and Sembawang as his service areas. Google offers video verification, so he records a continuous clip of his branded van, his tools, and his registration document. After approval he adds photos and services, copies his review link and sends it to his latest customer. His address stays hidden from the public.
Who should manage the profile?
Add a second owner or manager you trust, so you are not locked out if you lose access to a phone or email. When you work with a freelancer or agency, ask them to add you as an owner, not the reverse. If you part ways, you keep control. This is a common issue, similar to the ownership questions in who owns your website.
